William’s novel was published before Janshen and after 4 other novels, namely Danur, Peter, Hendrick, Hans. In May 2017, Risa Saraswati released her novel entitled William. Just like other novels, this novel tells the life story of a Dutch child.
William van Kemmen was born in the Netherlands and lived for several years there before his parents decided to move to Indonesia. His mother is very selfish and loves wealth. His father loved his wife and obeyed all his wife’s wishes.
Different with his 4 other friends, William is a quite child. He is a boy who is not good at words and only expresses his feelings through the melodies that he plays through his violin. The violin given by Grandfather named Nouval and then that is the name of William’s beloved violin. Although his mother had bought a new and better violin, William still liked and was loyal to the violin given by Grandfather.
William’s parents were preoccupied with the business owned by the Kemmen family and there was no time for William, he spent daily time studying at school and with his family’s assistants.
William is a smart kid but also quiet. He is rarely seen talking with his friends at school. His mother is indifferent to William and just wants to see his son look luxurious and look rich in front of her friends. That attitude was clearly disliked by William. William often remained silent.
Being born from a wealthy family does not make William fully happy, he often follows the wishes of his parents. As a quiet child, William almost never rebelled. Until one day the issue of Japan began to exist in Indonesia. William just silent and not too concerned about the issue.
His selfish parent still wants to live in Indonesia and fulfill his family’s wealth with a business that generates wealth. William’s parents did not choose to return to their home country, the Netherlands.
Until one day the Japanese really came to Indonesia and catch the Dutch people. At that time William just sit and played his violin, either outside the situation were so bad. Until finally he died at the hands of the Japanese
Somehow, his favorite violin still in his grasp.
The story of William is so sad and during his life he was not felt happy. Risa Saraswati is so good at telling this sad story.
The advantages of this novel are the storyline is not so complicated, the words used are easy to understand, and the cover of the book is very describing the figure of William. But also in every good novel is always have the weakness. The weakness is that there no illustration images of the events that happen in the novel, so the reader can’t imagine how that events can happen.
This story of novel William is suitable to read for adults or teenagers who want to know about the life story of the Dutch child who lived in Indonesia and also suitable to read for everyone who want to know the life in indonesian during the Dutch colonial period.
